Dr. Freeze® was founded in 2014 by renowned creative director and product developer Raihan Haque M.D. Over the years, Dr. Freeze has established itself as a worldwide leader in cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis is non-surgical medical procedure that uses the power of controlled cooling to specifically kill unwanted fat cells without harming other cells and tissue.

To perform this procedure successfully Dr. Freeze teamed up with the makers of CoolSculpting, a medical device that is utilized to perform cryolipolysis. Thanks to this collaboration, Dr. Freeze has performed tens of thousands of successful treatments that have resulted in long-lasting fat reduction and a high degree of patient satisfaction.

Despite the emergence of numerous worthy rivals, Dr. Freeze remains a top provider of CoolSculpting services in most regions where it has a flagship center. Interestingly, one of its top competitors is Dr. Sculpt®, another business that Dr. Haque founded in 2015. Dr. Haque created Dr. Sculpt (drsculpt.com) to pursue a more diverse and expansive approach to body contouring by introducing Hyper Sculpting®, which combines CoolSculpting, Dr. Flex magnetic muscle strengthening, and Dr. Food metabolic optimizers.

Dr. Freeze continues to expand its operations and improve its ability to freeze away targeted fat cells permanently.

In 2014 Dr. Haque served as a medical director at Dr. Food, the weight loss center he launched in Southern California. While leading consultations with new Dr. Food patients, Haque made note of a sub-group of prospective patients who were seeking medical weight loss solutions while their Body Mass Index was deemed normal and healthy per established standards. Haque observed that these patients were willing to undertake the expense and effort of participating in an advanced physician-supervised weight loss program, just to reduce specific bulges of unwanted fat.

There were a few interesting common traits among this patient population. First, the bulges of unwanted fat these patients wanted to reduce were pinchable. Secondly, other than having these noticeable bulges of pinchable fat, a majority of these prospective patients were otherwise relatively fit with a desirable physique. These patients also universally informed Dr. Haque and his team that these were stubborn bulges of pinchable fat that were resistant to reduction with exercise and weight loss efforts. Finally, most of these patients had considered targeting their “problem areas” with liposuction but did not pursue this option because they were apprehensive about the risks and downtime associated with a surgical procedure.

From these observations, Haque arrived at the following conclusions: 1) the pinchable bulges these people wanted to reduce were specifically composed of subcutaneous fat, not visceral fat; 2) diet and exercise alone would not have a meaningful impact on reducing these bulges because even with an aggressive effort, the number of fat cells that formed the bulges had been established and could not be reduced by losing weight; 3) the only way to reduce the bulges would be to physically remove the fat with a surgical procedure like liposuction or find some other mechanism to eliminate the subcutaneous fat cells.

After researching various potential solutions, Dr. Haque discovered cryolipolysis, a fat cell reduction technique that was developed by a lab at Harvard Medical School’s primary teaching hospital. The procedure was commercialized under the brand name CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, a company that was purchased by Allergan in 2017 for $2.4 billion. Allergan was subsequently acquired by AbbVie in 2020 for approximately $63 billion.

Cryolipolysis involves placing a device known as an “applicator” on a specific part of the body that the patient wants to target for fat reduction. The procedure lasts 35 to 75 minutes and during this time 20% to 25% of the targeted subcutaneous fat cells are frozen and irreparably damaged. Then over a course of one to six months the frozen fat cells die, disintegrate, and the remnants are naturally absorbed by the body. The majority of the dead fat cells complete this elimination process 4 to 12 weeks after the procedure.

At the time Dr. Haque discovered cryolipolysis in 2014, Zeltiq had received FDA-clearance to use CoolSculpting for the selective reduction of fat around the flanks (Sep. 2010) and the abdomen (May 2012).

For the next few months, Dr. Haque carefully evaluated the technology and simultaneously studied alternative methods of fat reduction. His research revealed that the CoolSculpting procedure consistently delivered undeniable results. Furthermore, Haque couldn’t find any other body sculpting solution that harnessed the power of controlled cooling to specifically target unwanted fat without harming other cells and tissue.

Ultimately, after months of research and careful deliberation, Haque concluded that CoolSculpting represented a revolutionary step forward in fat cell reduction.  In September of 2014, Dr. Haque launched Dr. Freeze, the world’s first dedicated CoolSculpting center. From that point on, Dr. Freeze focused on a single goal – to provide patients with the most advanced CoolSculpting services possible.

The rest, as they say, is history. Dr. Freeze went on to perform tens of thousands of successful CoolSculpting treatments, kill millions of stubborn unwanted fat cells, open multiple centers, and give a multitude of patients a slimmer, more attractive physique.

Today, Dr. Freeze continues to specialize in one thing: freezing away targeted fat cells for good. This dedicated focus has helped Dr. Freeze achieve a high degree of patient satisfaction and remain one of the most respected providers of CoolSculpting.
